Irish no-frills flyer Ryanair is to offer 21 summer destinations from Newcastle in England’s north-east, adding new routes to Barcelona and to Shannon Airport in Ireland’s south-west. The Shannon route would replace one to Cork, on Ireland’s south coast, the airport said, “providing a route into western Ireland, perfect for exploring the Atlantic peninsulas”, Newcastle Airport said. Although it means taking travellers away from Cork, the third-biggest city on the island of Ireland, the Shannon link offers direct onward flights to the US, with immigration clearance carried out at the airport.
