Lufthansa is again trumpeting its environmental credentials by publicising its deployment of a second aircraft tractor “powered by green electricity”. The tractor, which is “in operation at Frankfurt Airport for more than ten hours a day”, according to Lufthansa, can tow aircraft with a take-off weight of 350 tons at speeds of up to 25 km/h. The driving is being done by LEOS, Lufthansa’s ground handlers. The tractor is a Phoenix E all-electric made by German manufacturer Goldhofer and runs off lithium batteries. Lufthansa Group and its carriers recently announced the launch of more expensive carbon offset or green fares.
