Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas has stated that he will not be blackmailed by unions who are attempting to use safety issues, regarding allegedly ill-fitting cockpit door to push an industrial relations agenda. Joyce said most unions did not support the strategy and were annoyed at colleagues playing the safety and security card. He said the issue with the doors, some retro-fitted on Dash-8 aircraft and some factory-installed, had been identified by a pilot and was already being addressed when the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association accused the airline of failing to act, and the fixes had now been completed.
