Japan Airlines (JAL) has indicated in a recent interview that it plans to increase its stake in Chinese low-cost subsidiary Spring Airlines Japan from 5% to 51%. The news was reported in This Week in Asia, with an official announcement expected from JAL on May 7 with its  new midterm business plan. News reports suggest JAL will allocate approximately ¥10bn to the deal. The airline raised ¥180bn in a public stock offering in November 2020. Control of Spring Airlines Japan, with give the Japanese carrier access to more markets in China in time to capitalise on the recovery in air travel.
