Ukraine government fines Russian carriers for airspace violations

Twelve Russian carriers have been fined a total of UAH24.48 million ($2.09 million) by the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine for violating Ukrainian airspace during March and early April of this year. The fines relate to flights to Simferopol, in the Crimea which, although occupied and now administered by Russia, is still claimed by Kiev as Ukrainian territory.

RusJet Air, Red Wings, Aeroflot and Globus are among the carriers to be fined.

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) responded to the levy by stating that “the fines imposed have no legal basis given that the airlines are Russian, and were operating into what was then Russian territory”.
