Bavaria’s main air travel hub Munich Airport saw traffic soar tw0-and-a-half-fold year-on-year in 2022 to hit 31.6 million passengers. Nineteen million more passengers passed through the airport in 2022 compared with the year before, while air freight volume increased by 55% to 259,000 metric tonnes. Much of the increase was driven by a “busy summer” and the revival of transatlantic traffic to pre-Covid levels, with “aircraft movement” doubling over the year to around 285,000 take-offs and landings. Chief executive Jost Lammers said the removing pandemic restrictions “re-awakened” travel demand, something he sees as continuing into 2023.
