Vietnam Airlines has converted its order for 16 787-8 orders made in 2007 to the 787-9 “due to unexpected performance limitations on the original model.” The airline believe the -8s are now “too heavy to economically operate long-haul routes from Vietnam to Europe and North America.” This latest switch follows in the footsteps of ANA which also converted an order for 15 of the 55 787-8 it has on order to the -9.
