Redundancies announced at Mexicana

Mexicana de Aviacion has announced plans to eliminate half of its workforce and reduce its routes and fleet of aircraft by 70% with a view to resuming operations in December.

Union sources in local press estimate the cutbacks will mean 3,900 jobs being axed and that Mexicana will fly just 30 aircraft on 23 routes, six domestic, 17 international.

Serious financial problems led to Mexicana halting operations indefinitely on August 28 along with its sister budget carriers Click and Link.
