Malaysia Airlines possible sale

Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has confirmed that the government is considering options for flag carrier Malaysia Airlines Bhd., which include further investment, a sale, or a closure of the company.

“It is a very serious matter to shut down the national airline,” he said. “We will nevertheless be studying and investigating as to whether we should shut it down or we should sell it off or whether we should refinance it. All these things are open for the government to decide. We have to decide soon.”

The government has invested 6 billion ringgit ($1.5 billion) to date to assist the crisis-hit airline to return to profit after it struggled to return to health following the fatal loss of two of its aircraft, – MH370, which disappeared from radar screens on March 8, 2014, with the wreckage later found washed up on several islands in the Indian ocean; and MH 17, which was shot down over Ukraine on July 17, 2014.
