GOL to pay pilot bonuses for saving fuel

Brazilian airline Gol has implemented an incentive scheme to awarded bonuses to pilots and flight attendants who save fuel. The airline aims to save 700 tons of fuel per month, which means pilots need to reduce the time of each flight by 40 seconds each and maintain 55.1% of all flights on time. If the goal is reached, Gol will save 1.9 million reais (US$ 960,000) per month, of which 820 thousand reais (US$ 415,000) will be divided among pilots and flight attendants.
The airline has denied there is any safety risk since its pilots are well trained and they monitor flights to detect occasional detour. It also claims that between savings and safety, the priority is always safety.
