Airlines in the US have seen a roughly 24% drop in after-tax net income in the third quarter of 2025, according to a report from the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).
Net profits for airlines in the country fell from $2.1bn last year to $1.6bn in this year's third quarter.
Pre-tax operating profits were down to $2.7bn, compared with $3.1bn a year prior.
Operating revenues for the third quarter totalled $64.6bn. This comprised of $47.6bn in fares, $2bn in baggage fees, and $275 million in reservation change fees.
Expenses were $61.9bn for the quarter.
Domestic operations saw profits fall from $787 million in the third quarter last year down to $748 million in the third quarter of 2025. Operating profit for these operations was up slightly to $1.6bn, compared with $1.4bn last year.
For international operations, net profits dropped from $1.3bn last year down to $858 million this year. Operating profits fell from $1.7bn down to $1.2bn.
