NATS assumes air traffic and engineering services at Birmingham Airport

NATS has assumed responsibility for air traffic control (ATC) and engineering services at Birmingham Airport, the air traffic manager said today (February 16).

This follows a “smooth and safe transition” that was completed at the end of January 2026.

NATS was awarded a 10-year contract after a competitive tender process.

The transition follows a contract signing in November 2024 and the delivery of a comprehensive 12-month readiness programme.

Throughout this period, NATS worked closely with Birmingham Airport to ensure full operational, regulatory and technical alignment ahead of transition.

NATS will play a key role in supporting Birmingham Airport's long-term ambition to grow, modernise and strengthen its position as one of Europe's leading regional airports.

“Birmingham Airport has ambitious plans for growth and modernisation, and we’re proud to be supporting that next phase,” said NATS head and incoming Birmingham Tower general manager David Healey. “This transition reflects the confidence they have placed in NATS as a long-term partner.”

“NATS brings deep operational expertise, a strong safety culture and a clear vision for innovation,” said Birmingham Airport airfield operations director Andrew Holl.

More than 50 air traffic controllers and engineering specialists have transferred to NATS under TUPE arrangements, retaining their existing terms and conditions.
