The UK government is set to provide funding for airport technology, with six tech companies receiving a share of £450,000 ($583,740) to develop smart screening tech.

The UK Department for Transport said that each of the companies will develop scanning equipment to improve threat detection, reducing the number of false alarms and manual checks at airports.

This is something the department said would speed up screening processes, reducing inconvenience to passengers.

“As part of our plan for change, we are turbocharging investment in the aviation sector and going further and faster with expansion plans to kickstart economic growth and deliver high-skilled jobs across the country,” said Mike Kane, UK aviation minister.

The department highlighted that the UK aerospace and air transport sector worth £20bn ($25.9bn) to the country’s economy, stating investment will bolster economic growth.
