British Airways has disclosed that the disruption to airports in the UK caused by heavy snowfall has cost it £50 million. Every day London Heathrow was closed due to snow, cost the airline £10 million.
Although the UK flag carrier reported passenger traffic dropped in December – economy traffic fell by 9.6% - its business passenger demand remained strong and premium traffic fell just 1.6% compared to the same period in 2009. Investors were comforted by this news and the £50 million hit caused by the snow was in line with analyst expectations causing BA shares to rise 12.6p to 300.2p.
