Irish aircraft lessors welcome new SAF roadmap

Irish aircraft leasing representative group, Aircraft Leasing Ireland (ALI), has announced its support for the Irish government’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Policy Roadmap.

Published on August 21, the Department of Transport’s SAF roadmap outlines four pathways to tackle the challenges associated with decarbonisation of the aviation industry and boost SAF development and deployment across Ireland.

Progress of the policy roadmap follows four pathways: market certainty, collaboration, supporting uptake, and supporting production. Each pathway follows a set of directions and deliverable direction, building upon the European Union’s existing ReFuelEU programme.

ALI praised the initiative as “concrete, coordinated actions” for progressing SAF usage in Ireland, highlighting the positive short-term impact from reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the work aircraft lessors have already been undertaking in supporting the research and development for SAF and other sustainable technologies.

Group chair and Genesis CEO, Karl Griffin said: “Aircraft leasing firms have embraced the sustainability challenge as lessors continue to support airline customers’ drive to lower their emissions. The sector is investing hundreds of billions in lower emission aircraft and new technology and will continue to collaborate with Governments and regulators to drive progress. The SAF policy roadmap is an important step forward and our industry remains committed to driving progress towards a more sustainable future."

The roadmap was developed in collaboration with the SAF Taskforce, established by the Department of Transport in 2023. Delegates include government departments, airlines, airports, academics and industry groups. Griffin currently serves as ALI’s delegate for the Department of Transport’s SAF Task Force alongside Dubai Aerospace Enterprise Chief Risk Officer Michael Dowling.
