airBaltic secures wet lease agreement with Latin American startup SUA

airBaltic and Latin American startup airline Sociedad Uruguaya de Aviacion (SUA) Líneas Aéreas have entered a new wet lease agreement.

As part of this new partnership between the two airlines, airBaltic plans to wet lease up to five A220-300 aircraft to SUA from October of this year. The Latvian flag carrier also plans to support the airline in areas such as its operational set-up and pilot training.

“Through this alliance, we will benefit from airBaltic’s expertise in key areas such as fleet management, operational efficiency, and staff training, equipping us with the tools needed to develop a customer-focused operation,” commented Antonio Rama, CEO of SUA. “We are confident that their experience and support will be critical in this early phase of our development.”

SUA will take over the legacy of Pluna, the former flag carrier of Uruguay, which ceased operations in 2012 after the Uruguayan government decided to liquidate the struggling airline.

Marin Gauss, CEO of airBaltic, said that this new partnership will allow the Latvian airline to “foster innovation and improve air connectivity” globally.

The airline plans to launch operations by the fourth quarter of 2025, connecting key cities across Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile.
