Ethiopian Airlines orders nine 787 Dreamliners

Ethiopian Airlines has ordered nine Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, the airline confirmed today (January 20).

The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2031 and 2033.

State-owned Ethiopian said the aircraft will support the expansion of the airline's route network and enhance its international connectivity.

The order follows its commitment for 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets, which was signed at the Dubai Airshow. Both the 737 MAX order and today's order for the widebody jets were finalised last month.

“This order underscores our continued commitment to enhancing our fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, thereby further strengthening our customer service,” said Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew.

“We will continue to acquire more aircraft and adopt the latest technologies as part of our strategic vision to advance sustainable aviation.”

Ethiopian Airlines already operates a fleet of 787 Dreamliners, including the -8 and -9 variations, on intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to high-demand destinations across Europe, Asia and North America as well as intra-African routes.

“The 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be a game-changer for airlines around the world, and we are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines in their mission to connect Africa with the global community,” said Boeing VP of commercial sales and marketing for Africa.

Ethiopian also has orders for the 777X.

In addition to the airline's fleet orders, Ethiopian had secured the contract for the design of Bishoftu International Airport's $12.5bn airport project, breaking ground on January 10. The airport is located just outside of the country's capital Addis Ababa.

The airport is set to become the largest in the continent, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2030. This airport will be able to accommodate 60 million passengers annually after this first phase is completed and then 110 million passengers upon full completion. The airport is expected to feature four runways upon completion.
