American Airlines has partnered with Miami-Dade County on a $1bn expansion of Miami Airport's Concourse D.

The project will deliver a three-level concourse extension with 17 new gates that are capable of handling larger and modern aircraft, thus eliminating outdoor boarding.

Construction is set to begin next year.

The development will include expanded boarding areas, improved passenger flow and future capability for direct access to the airport's customs hall to streamline international arrivals.

“Miami is an essential hub and international gateway for American, and it’s a key part of our history and our future,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. “The brand-new, reimagined D60 is a transformational project that will provide a much-improved experience for our customers and our team.”

American currently operates around 400 daily departures from Miami, which is over 60% of the airport's traffic.
