Direct flights to Sharm el-Sheikh from the UK set to resume following ban

Direct flights to the Egyptian destination of Sharm el-Sheikh from the UK will resume for the first time since 2015.

The ban of flights to Sharm el-Sheikh lasted four years following the death of 224 people in the bombing of a Russian airliner, linked to the Islamic State group.

In the aftermath, Egyptian officials admitted the airport fell well short of international security standards.

Wael al-Nashar, president of the Egyptian Airports Company, said that Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport has received the renewal of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification for safety and quality standards.

Following the decision, Tui said it would reintroduce Sharm el-Sheikh flights following the decision, “taking into account customer demand”.

As a result of the restriction being lifted, EasyJet said it would “look at any opportunities”.
