The US transportation secretary Ray LaHood and FAA administrator Michael Huerta have warned airlines, airports and others that pending budget cuts, known as sequestration, will force the agency to reduce air traffic control (ATC) service levels this year that could cause flight delays “of up to 90 minutes” at major US airports during peak hours from April. The FAA is being forced to cut its spending by $600 million that “may reduce the efficiency of the national airspace in order to maintain the highest safety standards,” wrote LaHood and Huerta.
