Government objects to aiding Qantas

Both major Australian political parties have rebuked Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce over the management of the company in advance of what are expected to be bleak financial results.

Labor has stated that there should be no repeal of the foreign ownership restrictions on the airline even though the government has indicated it is open to making a change to the Qantas Sale Act.

In the meantime, Qantas has requested a more imminent government decision to help it cut the cost of its borrowing program with the provision of a standby debt facility.

Opposition politicians have declared however that such a more would give Qantas an unfair advantage over rivals.
