South American drugs gangs are reported to be buying used commercial aircraft to transport cocaine from South America to Africa, say US prosecutors. The gangs are alleged to be buying the jets then flying them more than 3,000 miles across the Atlantic to Africa as shipments along the African coast become more risky. Low radar coverage across the Atlantic means “drug planes” can often avoid detection.
