Munich Airport and Lufthansa extend partnership to 2056 with terminal expansion plans

Munich Airport and Lufthansa have agreed to extend and deepen their long-standing joint venture, with a new agreement running through to 2056 and including plans to expand terminal infrastructure and long-haul operations at the Bavarian hub.

The deal provides for the start of planning on an extension to Terminal 2, with a new pier to be added to the existing satellite building. The expansion is expected to increase annual capacity by up to 10 million passengers, with opening currently targeted for 2035.

Both parties said the agreement would support further growth in Munich, with Lufthansa planning to expand its long-haul fleet and network at the airport as part of the next phase of development.

Munich Airport and Lufthansa have jointly operated Terminal 2 since its opening in 2003, in a structure described by the airport as unique in Europe. The terminal and its satellite facility currently have capacity for around 36 million passengers annually.

The airport said the expansion can be accommodated within the existing two-runway system, with no change to the current moratorium on a third runway.

Chief executive Jost Lammers said the agreement would “significantly strengthen and expand the international hub”, while Bavarian officials highlighted the project’s expected contribution to regional economic growth and connectivity.
