Passengers boarding flights in Austrian will be charged a new "ecological air travel levy". European flights will incur a €8 charge, with €40 for long-haul flights.
The Austrian government hopes the will raise €60 million in 2011 and €90 million in successive years.
Airlines in Austria are not happy about the tax and have confirmed the cost will be passed onto passengers.
