When Air India spins off its ground handling and aircraft repair divisions into separate firms from November, the airline will lower its aircraft-to-employees ratio to 1:100 from 1:265. As a comparison Lufthansa German Airlines ratio is 1:127, Singapore Airlines is 1:140, and British Airways is 1:178.
Legacy carriers such as Air India tend to have more employees per aircraft, adding to cost. Air India employs some 28,000 people.
