The conference kicked off on a high note with active participation from airlines, OEMs, lessors, and other aviation stakeholders. Lalitya Dhavala from Ascend by CIRIUM shed light on the Indian domestic and international aviation market and the market outlook in APAC markets pre and post the coronavirus pandemic. Cirium data indicates that the global aviation industry is 95% back to pre-pandemic levels, and there is optimism in the air for aviation, not just in India but globally. Recovery is not globally synchronized, with the inter-Asia region still suffering mostly due to the late reopening of China. The first panel discussed lessor views of Indian airlines, considering the huge demand for aircraft. The second panel discussed the thorny issue of aircraft repossession in India and its many challenges. OEMs are positive on India for the sheer growth in the civil aviation market. Throughout the afternoon there was continued discussion and debate around leasing in India with a fascinating fireside discussion between the IFSCA General Manager at GIFT City and Mukund Santhanam of Airborne Capital. Along with an in depth look into structing aircraft lease is IFSC.
Day Two of the conference started strongly with a presentation from Paul Goodfellow, head of risk & restructuring at Stratos, illuminating the steadily-rising domestic civil aviation sector in India and commenting on how investors in India as well as the world are considering investment into sector. GIFT City was high on the agenda, with an in-depth look at the birth of the venture, and the Ministry’s efforts at setting up a leasing eco-system in India. Shashank Jain, VP & head of legal at Vistara-Tata SIA Airlines, explained how finance leasing will be a more popular choice for Indian airlines in the near future. Richard Williams brought us a presentation, fireside discussion and panel exploring the variety of financing products that could be used within the Indian market. After lunch there was a dynamic conversation between the Chief Technical Officer at Air India and Chief Investment Officer at Acumen Aviation which gave a good insight into the recent order of 470 aircraft. The day closed with a must see discussion about the environment, sustainability, eVTOLs, drones and future tech in the Indian market before Airbus gave a great presentation and then chaired a panel discussion which revolved around the dominating single-aisle market in India as compared to the global market in the sale and leaseback transactions concluding on the note that with new entrants coming in the Indian market, the sale and leaseback transactions are here to stay.
