The Department of Public Enterprises and the board of South African Airways (SAA) have appointed Monwabisi Kalawe, a relatively unknown candidate with no aviation experience, to the post of CEO. He is still to be presented to the Cabinet for recommendation by Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba, however before the appointment is formalized. Kalawe, currently managing director of Compass Group South Africa, a contract food services company, will be required to implement a turnaround strategy for the carrier that he had no hand in crafting. Unconfirmed local media reports suggest that a position may be created for acting CEO
