United Chief Executive Jeff Smisek has purchased 20,000 United shares at an average price of $39.62, which has led analysts to predict that he thinks the airline’s woes will be short-lived and easily repaired. Last week United Continental reported a first quarter loss. This was Smisek’s sixth share purchase during his tenure as chief executive and he now owns more than $20 million in United shares. United shares have gained 10% this year, which is substantially less than the 41% gain of American shares and the 34% increase by Delta stock.
