United Airlines Flight 837 bound for Japan took off from San Francisco last night only to turn back shortly after when it experienced an engine malfunction. Eye witnesses report flames coming from one of the engines. The 747 aircraft landed safely. A stalled compressor is being cited in various reports as the reason for the failure but this has not been confirmed.
