China Eastern Airlines merger with Shanghai Airlines means the airline will soon announce staff changes as it seeks to reduce numbers by half. Local media reports suggest that those employees will not be made redundant but transferred to other posts in accordance with China Eastern Airline’s service development pattern. More official details will be announced before the Spring Festival of 2011, and will be officially implemented shortly after. Although initially the board chairman of China Eastern Airlines, Liu Shaoyong, stated the merged airline would not reduce its employee numbers, sources say that personnel changes are now inevitable.
