Ethiopian Airlines has lost more than $1bn in revenue during the six month since the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the travel industry. Some 850 of its employees have also been infected with COVID-19. Speaking to media, CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said that the airline had rapidly adapted to the new environment and pivoted quickly to expanding its cargo capacity by repurposing 45 passenger aircraft. Ethiopian has also not received any financial assistance from the state nor made any permanent job cuts. Ethiopian is also a keen supporter of other African carriers and has offered to assist the new South African Airlines carrier
