Competitors muscle in on the West African market

Ethiopia Airlines, Kenya Airways and South Africa Airways (SAA) are attempting to build market share in West Africa by launching regional carriers with hubs in the region: Ethiopia Airlines with Asky; Kenya and Precision Air; and SAA and RwandAir.
Since the demise of Nigeria Airways, Air Afrique and Ghana’s national airline, the region has been without a national dominant carrier. New airline FastJet, based in Ghana, is expected to benefit from the demand in air travel in the region.
Plan to launch Ecowas Airways, a joint venture between Ecobank and investors that would have been acquired by ASky, have been thwarted when officials opposed the deal insisting that an airline from East Africa cannot establish such airline in West Africa and suggested that airlines in the sub-region should get together and establish the airline.
