Airberlin is optimizing its route network and offering more flights on well-established routes. The airline states that the “success of this strategy is reflected in a continuously increasing seat capacity utilization rate”. In March 2013, the German airline was able to increase capacity utilisation by 4.7 percentage points, to 87.73%. In total, airberlin flew 2,360,545 passengers for the month of March. Whereas in the context of its flight route optimization plan, airberlin reduced its available seat kilometers by 10.3%, to 4.29 billion, the revenue passenger kilometers only decreased by 5.2%, to 3.77 billion.
