Japan – 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake

Thanks to United Airlines, 2 staff members from International Medical Corps traveled to Kumamoto Prefecture following the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the main city at 01:25 JST on April 16. In the days that followed, more than 140 aftershocks were registered. Government reports indicate that 49 people perished and more than 3,100 people were injured in the quake. Additionally, more than 2,400 houses were destroyed, with another 20,000 damaged. The quake displaced 69,000 people, cut off access to clean water for 385,000 people, and caused 129,000 households to lose access to electricity. Numerous landslides occurred across the province, rendering roads impassable. More than a month later, approximately 150 people still remain in shelters.
