The A380 still has 2015 slots free

Harald Wilhelm, CFO of Airbus, reiterated that he expects to deliver 25 A380s in 2012 but there are still some slots to be booked from 2015. Airbus brought in only four new orders for the A380 last year, compared with a target of 30, and the company hasn’t booked a purchase for the A380 this year, on a goal of 25 contracts. The company has cut back output plans as it works through changing the wing structure, eating into sales growth. The fact is the A380 program looks further than ever away from breaking even and this statement today puts the pressure on poor old John Leahy’s department to find buyers for the 2015 slots. He pressure is on as Airbus suppliers start building the aircraft two years ahead of delivery, thus we are at this time looking at a slowdown of the program or white tails unless John Leahy has something up his sleeve – which, let us face it, he usually does.
Boeing though is in no better shape on its four engine offering. The 747-8 has seen production cut to1.75 planes a month from two, as there is little demand for the type.
