P&W declares CSeries GTF engine failure as a type-specific one-off

Pratt & Whitney CFO Greg Hayes has stated that the Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine used in Bombardier’s new CSeries regional jet is not expected to be used on other aircraft, and that the failure experienced during testing in May was specific to the CSeries installation. The test aircraft in question has been grounded since.

The GTF engine is also offered on the new A320neo along with other regional jets.

CFO Hayes said: “This particular fix we think is just related to the CSeries engine itself. Each aircraft’s installation architecture is a little bit different and we have not seen a similar issue on any of the other models that are out there.”

Hayes also said that it will be a “couple of weeks” before the aircraft flies again.
