Suharto denies he was bribed to the SFO

Tommy Suharto, the son of Indonesia’s late president, has denied allegations that he was bribed by Rolls-Royce to pursued Garuda Indonesia to choose its engines in a letter to the UK Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

Even though there is no legal case ongoing and the SFO did not request any such statement, in the letter, Suharto’s lawyers stated that he was not given $20 million or a Rolls-Royce car to encourage Garuda to buy Trent 700 engines in 1990 in an attempt to clear his name.

In 2012, the SFO ordered Rolls-Royce to hand over details of possible bribery and to conduct an internal inquiry into the claims. Following Rolls-Royce’ investigation via law firm, Debevoise & Plimpton, “matters of concern” in Indonesia and China and other unspecified markets over “concerns about bribery and corruption involving intermediaries in overseas markets” were reported to have been found.
