ICAO monitors Ebola outbreak but refrains from issuing travel warnings

The ICAO has stated it is monitoring the ongoing situation concerning the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, but has not issued any travel restrictions to or from the affected countries.

ICAO stated it is following the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), which “recently reiterated its advice” that based on current information, no travel or trade restrictions should be applied to Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone.

ICAO also said that along with the WHO and IATA, it had considered changes to passenger screening rules and procedures. Potential changes are “still being reviewed by the WHO,” ICAO said.

In addition, ICAO said it is continuing to consult with the WHO “‘on potential efforts which may be required to facilitate repatriation flights, as well as matters relating to air ambulance services in the affected areas.”

The WHO website currently lists more than 1,000 confirmed or probable cases of the Ebola virus in the region, with more than 600 confirmed or probable deaths.
