EU may suspend ETS to avert trade war

The European Union has sent signals, for the first time, that it may recommend the suspension of Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to avert a trade war with countries including China and the United States. The suspension would provide time for the International Civil Aviation Organisation to create a global solution on climate charges for the aviation industry.
Chinese carriers have already been banned from participating in ETS and the government has blocked all purchases of European aircraft. India too has banned airlines from complying with the scheme, while US lawmakers are close to setting similar rules.
Ministers from Germany, Spain, France and Britain are working to push for a global solution when ICAO convenes in September 2013.
