PIA refused wet-lease contracts

Four airlines have refused to deliver aircraft to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on ‘wet lease’ because of security fears.

The unidentified Eastern Europe and Central Asian carriers had expressed interest in providing four aircraft to PIA when it issued a tender in early June; but after the recent attacks on PIA aircraft in Karachi and Peshawar, the offers have been withdrawn.

PIA spokesman Mashhood Tajwar said: “We are negotiating with some foreign airlines and are optimistic of acquiring aircraft on wet lease. We are also in the process of floating a tender for acquiring 10 planes on dry lease this week.”

Four airlines suspended flights to Peshawar and Karachi after the attacks.
