Stansted airport, the UK airport largely used by low cost carriers, has been hit hard by budget airlines opting for other airports. Official figures from BAA how the number of air transport movements at Stansted fell by 11.7% in November, compared with the same month in 2009. Passenger numbers for the UK airport also fell by 7.6% year on year. BAA stated: “a reduction in low-cost airline capacity was the main factor behind the drop”. Ryanair cut its capacity by 17% this winter although easyJet’s capacity increased by 4.5%.
