ANA Holdings and Shwe Than Lwin launch Asian Blue

ANA Holdings and Shwe Than Lwin’s Golden Sky World have signed a joint venture to run an international airline following approval by the Myanmar Investment Commission. ANA Holding will hold 49 per cent stake in the airline, which is to be called Asian Blue, although approval from the Ministry of Transport is still required.

This deal comes following the collapsed deal for All Nippon Airways to acquire local Myanmar carrier, Asian Wings in 2014.

There is no doubting the potential of this airline and its ability to feed the ANA network, but with Air Asia, Malaysia Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Bangkok Airways, China Southern Airlines and Air Japan all flying between Myanmar and Japan via Yangon to Tokyo, it will be interesting to see if the demand on this route can soak-up the capacity. ANA though will be using the route to connect passengers via its hub and in that regard the pressure will be on for some existing players on this route where there could well be a loser.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has begun asking airlines, intermediaries and travel technology companies to share their views with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition (DG Comp) on how tickets are sold by airlines to travellers, either direct or via intermediaries. The EC has launched the investigation following airlines adding additional surcharges to bookings made via global distribution systems.
