Turkish cargo jet crash

A Turkish cargo jet has crashed near Kyrgyzstan’s Manas airport today, with at least 37 reported to have been killed, many of the dead were residents of a village struck by the 747 as it tried to land in dense fog.

The cargo aircraft was supposed to make a stopover at Manas, near the capital city Bishkek, on its way from Hong Kong to Istanbul, when it crashed when trying to land in poor visibility at 7:31am (0131 GMT), reports Reuters.

More than a thousand rescue workers were working on the scene by late morning in the residential area where 15 houses have been destroyed, Deputy Prime Minister Mukhammetkaly Abulgaziyev said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
