Lufthansa and ANA cargo JV deemed a success

Speaking in Tokyo, Peter Gerber, chief executive of German Lufthansa Cargo (LHC) declared the new cargo joint venture (JV) with ANA Cargo to be a success. The JV, which started in December 1, 2014 for Japan-European routes for the first phase, offers a total of 87 weekly flights that includes belly cargo capacities from Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa Passenger airlines as well as ANA passenger flights to Germany, Austrian to Vienna, Lufthansa passenger and Frankfurt-Tokyo Narita cargo flights.
“With a joint venture like this, you get benefits and opportunities which you would just get within a merger,” said Gerber.

Phase 2, which includes routes from Europe to Japan, will be implemented during summer 2015.

Gerber confirmed that LHC is also in talks to establish additional JVs, including service on North Atlantic routes.

Belly cargo in passenger aircraft is a significant source of revenue for Lufthansa intercontinental flights, Gerber said, adding that long-haul profitability depends on belly cargo profitability.
