Qatar Airways Cargo adds three A330-200Fs

May 23rd, 2013 by Victoria

Qatar Airways Cargo has welcomed three new Airbus A330-200F freighters to its fleet of seven aircraft. The A330s replace three Airbus A300 freighters that the airline has phased out to make way for the state-of-the-art aircraft.

Qatar Airways CEO Akbar al-Baker said the arrival of the A330 freighters signalled a new era for the airline’s cargo operations.

“The capacity of Qatar Airways Cargo has been significantly increased with the introduction of the new Airbus A330 freighters to our worldwide cargo route network,” he said.

“The arrival of the A330-200Fs comes at a time when Qatar Airways Cargo is undergoing significant development and growth. The opening of our brand-new $1bn cargo facility at Hamad International Airport later this year will see Qatar Airways Cargo handle 1.4mn tonnes of cargo annually, more than tripling the capacity of the existing facility.”

Qatar Airways Cargo will deploy the A330-200Fs – among the most advanced freighters operating in the industry today – on routes such as Amsterdam, Amman, Cairo, Colombo and Chennai, complementing the operations of the fleet’s Boeing 777F aircraft.

Qatar Airways chief officer (cargo) Ulrich Ogiermann said the airline’s cargo expansion plans and innovation initiatives would position it as a leading freight provider in the Middle East and internationally.

Ogiermann said: “2013 has already been a highly successful year for Qatar Airways Cargo with the hosting of IATA’s World Cargo Symposium in March, the arrival of our new Airbus A330s and a growing route network.

“As we continue to grow our operations and expand our reach to new and underserved destinations worldwide, we look forward to continue providing a world-class freighter service to our customers, with a further commitment to offering only the very best five-star service,” he added.

The fleet of Qatar Airways Cargo will expand further next month with the arrival of the airline’s fifth Boeing 777 freighter. Qatar Airways Cargo has welcomed three new Airbus A330-200F freighters to its fleet of seven aircraft.

UPS adds winglets to its 767 fleet

May 9th, 2013 by Victoria

UPS has added winglets to its Boeing 767 fleet in a bid to save fuel and reduce emissions.
These wingtip devices, which are arrow-shaped surfaces attached to the tip of each wing, enhance the overall efficiency of the aircraft, saving fuel by reducing drag while also lowering noise emissions by improving take-off performance. The modifications will save UPS more than six million gallons of fuel each year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 62,000 metric tonnes. UPS estimates approximately a four percent fuel savings on each 767 flight.
“UPS continues to lead the industry in sustainable business practices,” said David Abney, UPS chief operating officer. “With the widest portfolio of services in the industry, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce emissions, and drive down operating costs so our customers have the solutions they need to compete in a global economy. These winglets are a perfect example of sustainability in action. They are good business and good stewardship.”
UPS currently operates 54 of the 767 aircraft with five on order. The company plans to have winglets on all 767 aircraft by the end of 2014. Winglets are already installed on UPS’s 747, and MD-11 fleets, and the A300-600 has a similar device called a wingtip fence.
