WALSH HOPES TO LEAD AIRLINE CONSOLIDATION

Willie Walsh, chief of British Airways, has stated that the newly merged International Airlines Group wants to “lead the industry’s consolidation”. The merger between BA and Iberia was unanimously approved by shareholders on Monday.

BA and Iberia have already identified some 12 airlines that could merge with IAG to form the world’s biggest airline.

“Our future is a multinational, multibrands airline group. We look forward to welcoming further brands,” said Walsh.

Antonio Vazquez, chairman of Iberia and group chairman of IAG, said that future partners could join the group through alliances, mergers or acquisitions. He said that the consolidation of the industry was set and that IAG would be the sector leader.
