QANTAS GETS READY TO RETURN A380 FLEET TO FULL SERVICE

Qantas is ready to return its A380s to the air but the service will be limited to the UK route only and pilots have been given strict instructions not to use the engines to full thrust unless necessary. This is the airline’s restriction not the engine manufacturer.

Alan Joyce said that the restrictions will remain ”until we’re comfortable with the history and the information we’ll get from the continued operation over the next few weeks”.

Joyce was unable to confirm when Qantas will be confident enough to fly the A380 across the Pacific Ocean to Los Angeles, which requires maximum engine thrust due to strong headwinds.

The plan has been approved by Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority. The first flight will be returning an A380 from Los Angeles, in readiness for Saturday’s flight, QF31, from Sydney to London, via Singapore.

So far, two Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines have been replaced, while its other two engines have been checked and deemed fit for operation.

A second A380 is expected to depart Los Angeles for Sydney later this week, before a return to service at a time yet to be announced.
