MAS considers selling engineering arm

National carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is reported to be considering selling MAS Engineering in a bid to return to profitability. By spinning off the business, the airline can focus on rescuing its core passenger airline.

Other non-core businesses such as ground-handling, catering and maintenance could also be spun-off or sold as part of restructuring to help save the airline.

Although no formal plan has been announced for the sale or pin-off of MAS Engineering, MAS Employee Union (MASEU) has indicated that it would oppose any move to sell MAS Engineering since the airline wouldn’t be able to secure the jobs of the 4,000 employees after a sale.
