Joy Air to switch to LCC operation

Chinese regional carrier Joy Air, a joint venture between China Eastern Airlines and Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), has announced it is to become a low-cost carrier (LCC) in a bid to tap the growing Chinese domestic low-cost market.

On August 1st, AVIC and Joy Air signed a deal for 60 MA-Family aircraft as part of the airline’s policy change.

Zhou Qingsheng, general manager of Joy Air, said: “An aviation company which fulfills low-cost operation must rely on the economies of scale. For this reason, 60 MA60 aircraft with low fuel consumption were ordered at one time to pave the way for the low cost strategy.”

Joy Air will now focus on serving destinations in northwest and east China.
