Although US restrictions on Iran have been eased and airlines can now purchases spare parts, the direct import of aircraft remains prohibited. Despite this however the Iranian transport minister has stated that Iranian airlines have obtained 15 used aircraft since February. Transport Minister Abbas Akhoundi said nine aircraft – eight A340s and one A321 built post 2003 – entered the country over the weekend with delivery to Mahan Air. Of the eight other aircraft, two are being parted out since they are too old to fly.
